Over 56 billion farmed animals are slaughtered every year by humans. These shocking figures do not even include fish and other sea creatures, whose deaths are so vast they are only measured in tonnes.

It is estimated that, each year, 970 to 2,700 billion fish are caught from the wild, of which 450 to 1,000 billion are caught to make fishmeal and fish oil. Additionally, 37 to 120 billion farmed fish are killed for food.

Animals and fish are not simply food products. They are beings that think, feel, and want to enjoy their lives. An animal's life is as important and irreplaceable to them as ours is to us. Yet, as children, we are conditioned to view cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, and fish as inferior beings, whose purpose is to provide us with meat, milk, and eggs. This way of seeing other species is known as speciesism. It is time to change the way we perceive the animals with whom we share the planet. We must stop thinking of them as mere resources and start recognizing them as individual, sentient beings whose lives deserve respect and value.

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji said;

Jī▫a janṯ sabẖ māsahu ho▫e jī▫e la▫i▫ā vāserā ||
All beings and creatures are flesh; the soul has taken up its home in the flesh.

Abẖakẖ bẖakẖėh bẖakẖ ṯaj cẖẖodėh anḏẖ gurū jin kerā ||
They eat the uneatable and reject what they could eat. They have a teacher who is blind.

~ Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Guru Nanak, Ang 1290

Guru Angad Sahib Ji said;

Jī▫ā kā āhār jī▫a kẖāṇā ehu kare▫i ||
Animals eat other animals; this is what God has given them as food.

~ Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Guru Angad, Ang 955

Bhagat Kabir said;

Kabīr kẖūb kẖānā kẖīcẖrī jā mėh amriṯ lon ||
Kabir, the dinner of beans and rice is excellent, if it is flavored with salt.

Herā rotī kārne galā katāvai ka▫un ||
Who would cut their throat just to have meat with their bread?

~ Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Bhagat Kabir, Ang 1374

By recognizing the sacredness of all life, we can choose compassion in how we eat and live, honoring the lives of all beings.

Disclaimer

This counter displays estimated numbers of animals killed based on historical global data, primarily from the late 2010s to early 2020s. The figures are derived from a combination of international datasets and research estimates and may not reflect current or exact totals.

The "live" counter is a simulation that distributes yearly estimates evenly over time; it does not track real-time events. Actual animal deaths occur irregularly and vary by region, season, and industry practices.

Estimates for land animals (such as chickens, pigs, and cattle) are generally more reliable than those for fish, especially wild-caught fish, which are calculated using approximations based on total catch weight rather than exact counts.

All numbers presented should be interpreted as broad indicators of scale rather than precise or up-to-date measurements.
