1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Statements

1984 Statements

Statement submitted before the Nanavati Commission

Witness No. 120

Name : Harnam Singh

Age : 71 Years

Occupation : Business

Address : M-78, Hari Nagar, Gandhi Market, New Delhi

On SA

I had filed an affidavit before Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission of Inquiry. A photocopy of it is shown to me. It bears my signature. Its contents are correct. I have nothing more to say. The same may be read as part of my examination-in-chief.

Cross examination by S.S. Gandhi, Senior Advocate on behalf of Delhi Police

My house was about 250 yards from the Gurdwara. It is about 5 or 6 lanes away from my house. My shop was one gali before the place where the Gurdwara is situated. It was not possible to see from my house either the Gurdwara or my shop. I was at my house on 1.11.84. I had not personally seen the attack on Gurdwara or on my shop. My daughter was also at my home. Somebody had informed us that our shop was being looted.

As my daughter could not have been identified as Sikh I had sent her along with a person who had informed us about the burning of our shop. The mob had come to our locality three or four times and looted our shops. My shop was set on fire at about 3.00 pm. I had sent my daughter to see the shop at 2.00 pm. She had returned after waiting for about 10 minutes at the shop. She was not present when the shop was set on fire.

My daughter being a graduate had a discussion with the police as the police were not doing anything to save our shop. But fearing apprehension to her life she had come back home. My daughter had not identified the persons in the mob but she had noticed the presence of police at that place. Neither myself nor my daughter had seen the mob setting our shop on fire but we were told about it by others.

Read over and found correct.
