1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Virender Singh S/o Late S. Balwant Singh aged about 41 yrs. R/o 372, Shastri Nagar, Delhi-52, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That during 1984, I and my family were living at above said address and my father Late S. Balwant Singh was running his business of Kharad at T-565/1, Chamelion Road, Delhi, along with myself as I was helping him in running the said business.

2. That on 1st Nov.'84, we both could not reach our shop as the riots had erupted in the city after the death of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and the rioters followed us wherever we ran for safety. However, later on we were gathered by the rioters along with various other Sikh persons and we all were mercilessly beaten.

3. That some of the persons attacked died on the spot and other persons including us both, who were seriously injured, who were taken to Hindu Rao Hospital for treatment.

4. That thereafter my mother came to the hospital along with our neighbour Sh. Bhag Singh and all the injured persons including us both were made to lie on the floor and were given basic first aid treatment.

5. That I and my father had received grievous injuries on our person. That my father had received serious injuries on his head and right arm and I had also received similar serious injuries on my person.

6. That we were not being provided adequate and proper medical treatment at Hindu Rao Hospital due to which my mother and relatives took us to doctor B.L.Kapoor Memorial Hospital for further appropriate treatment.

7. That however, on 6th Dec.'84, my father Sh. Balwant Singh succumbed to his injuries and died. The death certificate and hospital treatment papers are attached with this affidavit.

8. That my father died due to Nov.'84 Carnage.

9. That neither I have received any compensation for injuries suffered by me due riots nor any compensation has been given to my widow mother by any authority.
