1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

Affidavit of Surjit Kaur, age 50 years, w/o S. Harbans Singh, resident of S-75, School Block, Shakarpur, Delhi-92.

I, the above named deponent do hereby solemnly affirm and state on oath as under: -

1. On 1-11-1984, a mob assembled and attacked the Gurdwara at about 8 AM. The mob then came to our house and burnt our one truck and one room. The mob was being led by Mithan Lal, Congress – I leader – Shyam Singh Tyagi, Tilak Raj Mistri, Girish owner of floor mill, Pt. Gopi Chand S/o Ram Niwas of A-51, Bhup Singh Tyagi, Kaloo Barber and Ram Raj Rana working in DESU.

While our truck was burning, our neighbour (one whose daughter is named Malka and the other whose daughter is named Teji) took us, i.e. myself, my husband, three daughter-in-law, four sons, three grand daughters, four grand sons and my niece who had come from Punjab, to their house. We stayed there up to 2nd evening. On the 2nd at about 11 O'clock, all the four rooms were set ablaze and the houses of all our Sikh neighbour were also set on fire.

Our men-folk were saved because they had burnt our truck on the 1st and we hid ourselves thereafter and they could not enter the house. But on the 2nd I heard repeatedly the mob shouting that the truck operating Sardar had missed. All the ornaments of my daughters-in-law, myself and that of my son whose marriage was fixed for 14th November was plundered before the house was set on fire. We could not even put on canvas shoes whilst leaving the house.

2. On the 2nd evening, we reached Pando Nagar, where my daughter lived. All of us did not leave together. We left one by one, after cutting our hair and beards, covering ourselves with sheets and blankets and after wearing caps. While leaving the house my daughter-in-law requested the police to take them to Tilak Nagar to the house of their father, who is working in the police station. The police took them to Shakarpur Police Station. They stayed there along with children. They all got together by 3-11-84. My brother-in-law who was working in DTC and living near our house, they all were killed.
