Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

AFFIDAVIT OF S. SARUP SINGH SON OF S. NATHU SINGH, AGED 55 YEARS, R/O 11/196, KALYANPURI, DELHI.

I, Sarup Singh, the above named Deponent, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. That I am an old man of 55 years and my eye – sight is weak. I am an uneducated person.

2. On 1-11-84 in the morning when we heard that some persons had killed our neighbour's son and thrown his body in a stream, we felt that our lives were also in danger.

3. In the morning at about 10am a huge mob surrounded our colony. The mob consisted of thousands of men who were carrying iron rods, lathis and swords etc. I saw that policemen were in front of the mob. The mob started beating Sikhs and burning their houses.

4. Seeing all that we were terrified and our family members began to hide themselves in different places. After we left, our house was looted and burnt. We suffered a loss of Rs.7 – 8 thousands.

5. After three days when military arrived, they took us to our houses.

6. 5 to 6 days from today, a policeman came to our house and asked me to accompany him to the police station. Seeing the police, I felt very afraid. That policeman took me on his cycle to the Police Thana. There I was produced before Manphool Singh Thanedar. There I saw that our old SHO Tyagi was also sitting with four / five other persons in the room of the Sub-Inspector.

I recognize those persons, though I do not know their names. The police officers told me that they want to record my statement. I was so terrified that I could not say anything. They had written something on a paper and asked me to sign on that paper.

I do not know what was written on that paper nor they read out to me what was written on that paper. Being terrified, I put my signatures. Later on, I came to know that they had filed that statement of mine before the Enquiry Commission enquiring into he riots. They had obtained my signatures at four places and had given no copy to me.
