1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Ram Krishna S/o Raja Ram aged about 47 years R/o 10-B/28 Ambedkar Basti, Maujpur Shahdara do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:

1. That on 31st October, 1984 I heard on radio in the noon that PM was shot at by her 2 Sikh Body Guards and that she was being operated upon and that she was being given blood etc.

2. That on the same night, my neighbours who returned from their business told horowing tales that how they saw the Sikhs being killed at Old Delhi Railway Station and that Sikh Auto Rikshaw Drivers were pulled out of their vehicle and beaten to death by dashing them against stones.

3. That on 1.11.84 I found no bus plying and took to bicycle to reach my office at Express Building, near ITO, New Delhi. In the way at noon I saw Sikh houses and shops burning in Maujpur, Brahmpuri, Usmanpur areas and mobs were roaming the streets in search of Sikhs and their property for looting and burning.

4. That in the evening (on 1.11.84) I heard in my office that curfew was imposed all over Delhi except, New Delhi and people with curfew passes could move on roads My office issued identity cards for its employees and office vans were pressed into service to reach the employees to their homes.

At 12.30 AM in an office van taking eight employees inclusive of me the officevan started via ITO Bridge, Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Krishna Nagar, Vivek Vicar, Shahadara, New Seelampur, Brahmpuri areas and dropped all employees to the nearest place of their residence.

I was last to drop at Ghonda village. In the way I saw, sitting in the van, city burning at places, smokes emitting buildings and organised mobs weildinglathis and wooden cot-rods roaming.

Our van was stopped 40-50 times in the way to search Sikhs inside. In my area I can recognise a few persons who did this as Gaj Singh, Chinta Gujar, Satish Sharma, Puran and his son Tara Chand etc.

5. That on 2nd, 3rd November, 1984 looting, burning, killing continued unabated. There was no plice to see. None to enforce curfew. Only hooligans ruled the roast. They appointed nigtht guards themselves. I was compelled to sit as guard outside my housewith a lathi in my hand.

6. The hooligans were spreading rumors like : (1) Sikhs are coming from that direction they are wielding necked swords, (2) Sikhs have poisoned the water in the city, and (3) Sikhs in Punjab are sending corpses of Hindus in train. Trains are coming full of wounded and killed Hindus from Punjab.

7. Thus curfew allowed no newspapers to reach and therefore no news or rumour could be verified and countered for 4-5 days and the Radio and TV gave stocks news, - situation is fast becoming normal. This is a very short account of seen, heard and believed to be true.
