1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

Affidavit of Pritpal Kaur widow of late Sahib Singh, aged 30 years resident of S-425, School Block, Shakarpur, Delhi. Presently residing at C-94D, Tilak Vihar.

I, the deponent above named do hereby solemnly state on oath as under: -

The mob came on 1.11.84 at about 12 O'clock. It comprised of men from Shakarpur. The mob comprised of about 1000 men. They had lathis, hand pump handles, swords, etc. with them and were shouting, "Hamari Devi Ko Maar Diya! Hum Ek Bhi Sardar Ko Nahin Chhorengay"! (They have killed our goddess. We will not spare eve a single Sikh). The Purbiya and Bihari women of our street were also standing outside and exhorting to kill Sikhs.

The mob attacked the house of Charan Kaur whose is fourth house from ours. The mob dragged out her two young sons namely Tirath Singh and Tarlochan Singh. First they beat them mercilessly. Then they heaped upon them the quilts, clothing etc. from her house. Then they took kerosene oil from her house and poured upon them. Then they set them on fire in front of their mother (Charan Kaur). Then they badly injured Charan Kaur also and left the place.

On the same night we hid ourselves in the house of M.K. Chaddha residing at S-415. Lot of commotion prevailed throughout that night. They used to visit the house of every Hindu and enquire whether they had given shelter to any Sikh. They asked them not to be a traitor and turn out or kill the Sikhs, if any, hiding in their house.

The mob came again on 2.11.1984 at about 8 AM. There were some persons from our mohalla as well. Sham Singh Tyagi and Tilak were leading the mob. Apart from them, there were Gainda Singh, waste paper dealer and his servant, Rama Nand Raddiwala (waste paper dealer), and his servant, Jubanee, Shankar, Madan, Hara Singh, father of Dharminder Kanhaiya, Garboo raddiwala (waste paper dealer). Shukla Paanwala, shoemaker who sits opposite Balaknath Mandir, Haro Singh's son and his servant, Puneeta (Dharminder's sister), Thakuraayan (Chander Pal's tenant) who is blind of one eye and her husband revealed to the mob that we were hiding in the house of Mr. Chaddha.

First they set our house on fire, then they came to Chaddha's house and asked him to turn out the Sikhs. When he did not oblige them, they tried to beat him also. My husband Sahib Singh and my brother Harpal Singh had taken refuge in a vacant house adjacent to that of Mr. Chadha. The mob broke open the door of that house dragged out my husband and beat him mercilessly with whatever weapon they had with them. They dragged him away in front of my eyes. They piled up the remaining articles of my house, wooden planks etc. upon him and set him on fire. Then they nabbed my brother and threw him in the same bonfire. When my brother tried to escape by running away from there, they hit him hard on his head and he fell down there.

On 2.11.84, I took my small daughter with me started on foot and reached my parent's house at Ram Nagar (Krishna Nagar). There an attack was launched on 4.11.84 at about 4.30. We escaped somehow and on 5.11.84 morning, reached Gandhi Nagar Police Station. From there we were sent to camp.

My husband was a Contractor. He was a mistry. Our monthly coming was about Rs.1500/-. We suffered a loss of about Rs.1 lakh. We did not get any compensation.
