1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Pritam Singh, S/o Arjan Singh, aged about 67yrs., R/o WZ-10 A 2, New Shahpura, Delhi-18, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That in Oct./ Nov.'84, I along with my family was residing at Y-879,895, J.J. Colony I, Nangloi, Delhi-41.

2. That on 1-11-84, at about 3 pm a train from Bahadurgarh side came and it halted near Y-Block Crossing, Nangloi. A large number of miscreants having lathis, iron rods etc. alighted from the train. They started attacking the houses of Sikhs and killing Sikh people. Many other miscreants mostly Jamadaars residing in nearby Colonies No.3 and 4 also joined them.

3. That I hid in the house of my neighbour to save myself. My family members also ran away and secured themselves in the house of neighbours and were thus saved.

4. That all my household goods / articles were taken away / looted by the miscreants and my house was burnt. I suffered a loss of about Rs.70,000/- (Rs. Seventy Thousand) on account of arson and looting of my household goods / articles.

5. That we were saved by one well wisher namely Ram Kumar Fauji who took us to Hend Kundla Village (Near Ghevra Mundka Mor) and kept us there till the position normalized.

6. That on 5-11-84, we came to Block 20, Bhatta Sahib Gurdwara, Tilak Nagar, Delhi, where we remained for about a week.

7. That on 12-11-84, I went to Police Station, Nangloi to lodge a complaint of the incident. There, instead of recording my statement, the police gave me a cyclostyled form and noted down my name and address in the said form. Thereafter they procured my signature on the said form. (Enclosed as Annexure-1)

8. That thereafter I went to the Police Station, Nangloi and requested for recovery of my looted goods. But neither any goods / articles were recovered nor any compensation on account of looting etc. of goods were given to me though I suffered a loss of Rs.70,000/- as stated above. I was paid only Rs.5,000/- vide cheque No.827920 as relief for damage to my house though I incurred an expenditure of about Rs.25,000/- in getting my burnt house repaired.

9. That I am entitled to following compensation:-

a. Loss on account of household goods Rs.70,000-00

b. Damage to my house Rs.20,000-00

Total Rs.90,000-00
