1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Parkash Kaur, aged 44 years wife of S. Hari Singh, r/o J-324, Shakurpur Colony, Delhi, solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. On 31.10.84 the news of the assassination of Shri. Indira Gandhi had come to this colony, but nothing untoward happened.

2. On 1.11.84 Sikhs were being attacked on the ring Road while passing on the way from Wazirpur to Britannia Biscuits factory. From people living around there it came to our notice that rioters were assembling and talking to kill the Sikhs, their children and plunder their goods.

3. On 1.11.84 in the morning the mob started destroying the Gurdwara of G-Block of Shakurpur Colony. These rioters had come in trucks. Their number was about 400-500 and they were carrying lathis, dandas, iron rods and cans of kerosene oil.

There were 4-5 houses belonging to Sikhs just in front of the Gurdwara. Those houses were destroyed and goods were looted away and S. Mahanta Singh was killed. This news was given to us by our neighbour. The rioters incited the Hindus of our colony to kill the sikhs. We escaped to our neighbour out of fear and hid ourselves there.

4. When Mahanta Singh was being killed by the rioters, his daughter-in-law tried to save him. Then those people tried to kill her also. But she ran away. Those who had come in truck from outside our colony, they started massacre in the colony and themselves went away in trucks. This thing was narrated to me by Mahanta Singh's wife and daughter-in-law.

5. At about 1 p.m. news were coming to us that lock of our houses were broken. These miscreants belonged to J- Block and they were Harijans by caste. They said that our scooter and fridge were taken out and burnt, and some people had started looting our luggage and searching us. After some time some persons whom we recognize cut the long hair of my three sons and asked us to leave our house and go away otherwise they would kill all of us.

In the meantime some other persons started breaking the window and door of the house where we were hiding. They beat my elder son with iron rods. The owners of that house asked us to come down and the mob threatened to burn the house. We came down and with six members of the family and started towards the Ring Road through a narrow street lane. When we passed that side we saw that our house was being looted and our fridge and scooter were burning in front of our house.

6. We walked a short distance and when we reached the H- Block crossing we saw that those very persons who were coming behind us and whom we knew well started beating us with sticks. They threw away my husband thinking him to be dead. My younger son got injured on his head and he fell down unconscious. Two of my sons ran away towards Lawrence Road.

Some people we saw time and again beating my injured and unconscious husband with lathis to ascertain as to whether he was alive or dead. I and my daughter were sitting there and watching helplessly. When they were beating my husband I interceded to save him by holding their lathis but those people beat me also. They were the same persons who had cut the hair of my two sons forcibly and put bidis in their mouths.

My son who had survived due to their being now clean shaven had escaped via Lawrence Road. My son then sent some of their friends who put my husband in their jeep and carried him to Bara Hindu Rao hospital where he was admitted. After 6 days my husband was discharged. We have hospital Discharge certificate and a copy of the F.I.R. No. 511. Out of the mob the persons whom I can recognize are the following:-

i) Mangal

ii) Sukhbir

iii) Hari

iv) Azad

v) Randhir

vi) Om Prakash

vii) Habib

viii) Dharm

There were others also whom we can identify but do not know their names. They had looted our houses and threw away the gas cylinders in the gutters and then burnt off our houses. The cylinders were thrown out because had the cylinders caught fire, adjoining Hindu houses would have also been burnt, so cylinders were burnt outside.
