1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Nirmal Kaur, W/o Sh. Harbans Singh, 38 years, R/o R-259, Gali No. 5, Sagarpur, Nangal Rai, Delhi-46, solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. On 31-10-84, we heard of assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and the Gurdwara of our colony was set on fire the same evening. My husband and my nephew went to the Gurdwara and found the same completely burning. We also watched the fire at night from our roof.

2. On 1-11-84, my husband along with 5 / 6 persons went to the P. S. Cantt. for lodging a report. The SHO replied that he had no force for them or to save the Gurdwara. He refused to register their report and sent them back. We went to our neighbours and saw our house set to fire. Then my husband came out. On seeing him the mob shouted to catch him and kill him. He ran to the house of Baldev Singh where my nephew Daljit was already taking shelter.

In the meantime, the mob, headed by Raj Bania, ran after my husband, caught him and gave blows on his head with iron rods. So he fell down unconscious. Raj Bania sprinkled kerosene oil on my husband and set the fire. Thus my husband was killed. Raj Bania announced that they had started the action so no Sikh should be left alive. He took the mob away after killing my husband. With the help of the neighbours I brought the dead body of my husband to my house.

3. On 2-11-84, the neighbours cremated my husband. My brother Joginder Singh who is in BSF brought me to Hari Nagar in his official vehicle. On 4-11-84, he left me in the Camp at Sadar P. S. We have suffered the damage of more than Rs. 1 lakh.
