1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Mohinderjit Kaur, W/o S. Gurbachan Singh, aged 38 yrs., R/o WZ-C/7, Krishna Park, Gali No.8, Tilak Nagar, N.D.-18, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That during Oct./ Nov.'84, I was residing at Y-874, J.J. Colony, Nangloi, Delhi-41, my mother in law, my brother in law Trilochan Singh, aged 17 yrs, my sister in law Baldev Kaur age 16 yrs. and my Devar of 7 yrs. were also residing there. My husband was out of Delhi.

2. That on 1st Nov.'84, at about 10 o'clock there was lot of tension in the area. Large groups of persons armed with weapons like iron rods, lathis, knives, axes, kerosene oil etc. were attacking Sikhs and looting and burning the houses of Sikhs.

3. That at that time my newly born daughter was only 13 days old was with me. At about 12 Noon the miscreants mob started pelting stones at our house.

4. That on seeing the mob my brother in law, Trilochan Singh ran out of the house but the miscreants chased him and killed him on the road.

5. That in front of the colony there is a railway track. A train from Rohtak side came and stopped in front of the colony. Many people alighted from the train. These people were carrying rods lathis, knives and other weapons. They were raising loud slogans that the Sikh men would be killed in the day time and their women will be dishonoured at night.

6. That these people were expert in handling rods and with one stroke they could kill a person. Thus a large number of Sikhs in Nangloi were killed in short time.

7. That on 1st Nov.'84, at about 7 pm the miscreants again came and threw stones at our house. At that time my father in law was not at home. We were highly frightened. Little later at about 8 pm my neighbours came and took all of us to their house and gave us shelter for the night.

8. That on 2nd Nov.'84, at 7am we left our neighbour's house and managed to reach Nangloi Police Station and took shelter their.

9. That in the evening of 2nd Nov.'84, a transport was sent by Gurdwara B Block Tilak Nagar and we all went there. From there I went to my parents house where I stayed for next one month.

10. That my husband returned to Delhi on 5th Nov.'84. Later I came to see my house and found that the entire house was burnt. All my personal belonging, dowry articles (I was married recently) and household goods were looted / burnt.

11. That I suffered a loss of 1.5 lakhs. I did not received any compensation whatsoever for the loss suffered by me.

12. That I lodged complaint at the P.S. Nangloi on 18th Nov.'84. (copy annexed)

13. That I am entitled to compensation of Rs.1.5 lakhs on account of loss suffered by me as stated above.
