Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

AFFIDAVIT OF S. JOGINDER SINGH BAJWA, SON OF S. MOTA SINGH, AGED 42 YEARS, RESIDENT OF POCKET NO.3, FLAT NO.301, PASCHIMPURI, NEW DELHI-110068.

I, Joginder Singh, the above named Deponent, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. On 31-10-84, we, the residents of our abovementioned locality and members of our Guru Singh Sabha felt very sad to hear the news of the sad and tragic death of our beloved Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

We then cancelled our religious programme of taking out the 'Parbhat Pheri' on the morning of 1-11-84. Such Parbhat Pheries are taken out on the occasion of the birthday celebrations of our first Guru Nanak Sahib Ji.

2. On 1-11-84 at about 10:30 am an ASI came to our Gurdwara and told us that a very big crowd was coming to destroy the Gurdwara. He further said that if we could save anyone, we should do. This crowd was of Madipur, Pocket No.2 and Islam areas.

It consisted of about 400 men and they carried lathis, iron rods and cans of kerosene oil as well as white powder in packets. This crowd first looted the Gurdwara and set it on fire and brought down the 'Nishan Sahib'. Then the crowd damaged our houses.

3. When the mob had partly damaged our house property we along with some other co-residents Hindus requested them with folded hands and sent them out. After a short time, one Rajbir, who is an activist of Congress (I) came in his jeep and brought a mob with him and completely looted our goods. Then we rang up telephone No.100 and requested for police help, but no policeman turned up for our help.

We remained hidden in our places for about two / three days. On 6th / 7th November, 1984, we went to Punjabi Bagh Police Station and lodged an FIR. Therein we had mentioned that we were afraid of some miscreants but the police had done nothing in the matter, nor did they take any action against those miscreants.

4. The police did not do anything for our security. We had rung up the police a number of times to state that the crowd was a danger to our lives and the houses. Instead of protecting us the police egged on the crowd, which led to so much material and human loss in the presence of the police.
