1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Jaswant Singh S/o S. Partap Singh, aged about 23 yrs., R/o A-172, J.J. Colony, Chowkhandi, P.O. Tilak Nagar, New Delhi-18, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. That since my birth I had been residing at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Pul Bangash, Delhi-6, because my father been an employee of this Gurdwara. I shifted to my new residence in May 1985.

2. That on November'84, at about 1:30 P.M., a strong mob of about 3000 – 4000 persons attacked the Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Pul Bangash, Delhi-6. There were all armed with deadly weapons like iron rods, swords, lathis, knives etc. The mob was being led by the following: -

1) Ravi, r/o Nawab Ganj, Delhi-6, who is running a TV training shop under the name and style of M/s Navbharat TV Training Centre at Raghuvira Market, Near Gurdwara Singh Sabha.

2) Titu Aman, a known bad character of Pahari Dhiraj whose photo is exhibited at P.S. Bara Hindu Rao, Delhi-6.

3) Suresh Panwala, another known bad character of Pahari Dhiraj whose photo is exhibited at P.S., Bara Hindu Rao, Delhi-6.

I do now know the name of few other persons in the mob but can recognize them if produced before me. The mob was raising anti-Sikh slogans and its leaders named above were inciting them to kill every Sikh in India.

3. That on seeing this mob we were very much scared and sought refuge in a small room at the top floor of the Gurdwara building. From the windows I could see the mob and its various illegal acts.

4. That there were two jeeps full of P.A.C. personnel outside the Gurdwara building but they did not take any action, to disperse the mob.

5. That the mob hurled petrol bombs and sprinkled kerosene oil on Gurdwara and set it on fire. A few cooking gas cylinders were also thrown inside.

6. That my uncle (father's younger brother) S. Thakur Singh S/o S. Sunder Singh, r/o 37/3, Double Storey Ashok Nagar, Near Santpura Gurdwara, Tilak Nagar, Delhi-18, came out of the Gurdwara with folded hands to pacify the mob.

7. That Shri Ravi aforesaid, on seeing my uncle, pounced upon him and hit him on head with a heavy iron rod. My uncle fell on the ground unconscious and started bleeding profusely. Then he was dragged by Titu Aman to the main road in front of Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Pul Bangash, Delhi-6.

8. That my uncle had still signs of life when the persons mentioned above threw truck tyres over his unconscious body. The truck tyres were taken from the neighbouring tyre shop. They sprinkled kerosene oil over the tyres and set my uncle on fire.

9. That at about 4 or 4:30 P.M. about 10 – 12 people from the mob brought two badly wounded Sikhs in a wooden trolley. One of them was S. Gurcharan Singh, R/o Shahpura, Tilak Nagar, Delhi-18, who had been working with me with M/s Bedi electronics, 1782, Azad Market, Delhi-6. Though he was badly wounded but was still living. The other Sikh was Badal Singh who performed Kirtan at the Gurdwara. The aforesaid persons asked the mob to throw these two badly wounded Sikhs on the fire, where my uncle's body was burning. After throwing these two persons in fire more truck tyres were thrown over their bodies. In a short time there remain nothing but ashes of there three persons.

10. That throughout the incident of killing and burning aforesaid the two jeeps loads of P.A.C. personnel remained mutely standing in front of the Gurdwara. Instead of helping us, they incited the crowd to proceed with their nefarious anti-Sikh acts. They also fired three rounds at us towards the side of Gurdwara.

11. That my cousin Manmohan Kaur D/o my aforesaid uncle S. Thakur Singh filed a report with the P.S. Bara Hindu Rao, on 13-11-84 (photocopy attached herewith).

12. That I alongwith my family were ultimately rescued by the Mohammedan residents of the locality, around midnight of 1st November'84, and on 2nd November '84, in the evening we were taken by Police to Sis Ganj Gurdwara.

13. That all my household effects were completely destroyed by the fire raged by the miscreants stated above.
