1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

Affidavit of Ishar Singh S/o S. Attar Singh, aged 60 years, r/o Y-861, Nangloi, New Delhi, who at present is staying at C-125A, Tilak Vihar.

I do hereby solemnly affirm as under: -

1. On 1-11-84, a mob of 1000 – 2000 people came to our locality at around 11 am. They were from the nearby villages and came by trucks and trollies. They all were carrying lathis, iron rods and other weapons. From the mob some persons set the house of Sikhs on fire.

2. About noon, a train came from Rohtak and was stopped near Y-Block latrines. About 2000 – 3000 people came out of that train and encircled our houses. They at once started killing the Sikhs and setting the fires. To start the fires the mob had kerosene oil, petrol and other chemicals and a white powder with which the fire would spurt – when it (the powder) was thrown around.

After killing the persons, the mob used to disfigure their faces so that they could not be recognized. Many people were killed in fornth of us but because of confusion all round and the faces having been disfigured, the dead persons could not be recognized. Two young girls jumped from the terraces of their houses.

The mob hit them on the heads with lathis and half – killed them. Whilst they were still in agony, the kerosene oil was put on them and they were burnt alive. The people who came by train, belonged to Haryana. But some persons of our neighbourhood also joined them in the killings.

3. By the evening about 6 o'clock the Gurdwara was burnt including the Guru Granth Sahibji and the Roomallas. They looted the entire belongings of the Gurdwara. The approximate cost of the looted property of the Gurdwara would be about 2 to 2 ½ lakhs. MY house and my son's house – Y-841 and 861 respectively were also burnt after looting.

We hid ourselves for the night in the house of a friend of mine named Satpal, who stays about four houses away. On 2-11-84, we hid ourselves the whole day in Angarwali School. The same night about 10 pm, we went to the house of a relative opposite where all the residents of the locality were taking shelter. We spent that night in the midst of ladies and children.

4. On 3-11-84, about 10 / 11 am, the CRP saved us. Some ladies and children were already in the police station. Those ladies and children who had taken shelter in the homes of Muslims and Bangalies were also evacuated by us to the police station. From there under our own arrangements we came to Gurdwara Patha Sahib at B-Block, Tilak Nagar, where refugee camp had been established. Some day we went to our relatives at Subhash Nagar.

During this tragic situation, we expected some help from the police out we never get any help from them.
