1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Hardev Singh aged about 21 years, s/o late Pal Singh, r/o C-36/D, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi, do hereby solemn affirmation state and declare as under: -

1. That earlier at the relevant time I was residing with my parents at H. No. K-32, West Gonda, Shahdara, Delhi-32.

2. That on 2. 11. 84, at about 1. 30 PM we heard that mob of Non-Sikh is coming towards our house and they were creating loud unfriendly noises and abuses. So, alongwith my father Pal Singh and another relative Baldev Singh immediately rushed and hid ourselves in the adjoining house No. E-81, belonging to Hindu Sindhi family.

That within about 5 minutes the mob reached our house. They looted our property in the house and the set our house on fire. They were about 250 to 300 persons in the mob. The mob remained at our house for about one hour. We remained in our hide out till 2. 30 PM and we had to get out of that house because the non-sikhs residents of the area which were muslims as well as Hindus threatened the Sindhi family that if they failed to turn us out of their house then their house shall also be burnt.

One Amin and one Muslim Milk Dairy owner of K-Block and one Flour Mill owner and his wife and about six seven more persons of our locality, whom I can identify but I do not know their names and numbers of their house, dragged us. I ran for safety and jumped into my house which was already burnt and took refuge in one corner of the workshop which was in part of that house.

My father Pal Singh and relative Baldev Singh were caught by the above mentioned persons and they were killed by blows of iron rods and lathis and then were burnt when they were still alive. I saw this with my own eyes from my hide out.

3. The police was very much near by and in the presence of the police this gruesome murders were committed but the police turned blind eye to it.

4. My mother, wife of S. Baldev Singh were also with me in that hide out in workshop throughout the night. We were hearing Amin asking about my whereabout from the people of the locality in order to kill me. No body knew that we were there in the workshop except Sindhi family of K-81 and one Vinod Kumar of K-84 who helped us very much in this hour of danger. My hair were cut in the night to save me. At about 9 AM on 3-11-84, Bahadur Singh (clean shaven) the partner of my father in the business was somehow or the other informed by my mother to some one and he came and took me away to Jamuna Vihar at about 7. 30 AM on his cycle.

5. That on 8-11-84, I lodged report with Jamuna Vihar Police Station about the murders of my father Pal Singh and relative Baldev Singh. But I do not know what is recorded by the police in the complaint. However, no action was taken against the culprits by the police.

6. That the loss of property caused to us is more than Rs. 30,000/-. Only five thousand rupees is paid to my mother by the government as compensation as damaged to the house. Nothing is paid for the goods looted and Rs. 10,000/- is paid to my mother for the murder of my father.

Action may be taken against the culprits and police officials and necessary compensation be paid to us.
