1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Harbhajan Singh Sindhu S/o Balwant Singh aged 48 years R/o 349/3 Railway Colony, Rani Bagh, Delhi do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under:

1. That at present I am working as Office Superintendent in Railways. I am graduate.

2. In November I was living at Bhjan Pura in East Delhi.

3. We were seven members in the family including my father, father two sisters, my wife and daughter.

4. That on 1st November some disturbances started in C-Block Damri extension. All the Sikhs of that area gathered in Gurdwara Nanaksar armed with whaever they could get hold of around. SHO Bhim Singh came there and he told Sikhs to surrender their arms and go back to their houses. He also told the mob that if you cannot handle few Sikhs then you should wear bangles.

After Sikhs went to their houses. The mob attacked the Sikhs. My father had retired from Indian National Army and was a freedom fighter. My father had very good relations with the Gujjars who were living in our mohalla. We were saved mainly due to those gujjars. We were given shelter by neighbours and we were in different houses.

However, our neighbours could not stop the mob for a very long and on the 3rd mob forcibly came to our house and looted and burnt our house as well as other Sikh family who were my uncle. Mob enquired about us but nobody told them where we were hiding. As such our lives were saved but house was totally looted and destroyed.

5. On 3rd November when Army came I went with one of the officers to locate my uncle who was living in other block. When I reached there I found my killed and his body was still burning. I lodged an FIR a copy of which is enclosed.

6. I suffered a loss of ________ and have received a compensation of only Rs.10,000/- (rupees ten thousand only).
