I, Harbans Kaur Virdi W/o Late S. Kartar Singh Virdi aged 70 yrs. now residing at D-212, M.I.G. Flats, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-
1. That in Oct./Nov.'84, I and my family were residing in 38/4, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi.
2. That on Saturday, 3rd Nov.'84, at about 3 pm I and my late husband were watching on the T.V. the funeral of Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India. My sons and a nephew were on the terrace.
3. That we suddenly heard a brick falling in the outer compound. My nephew Charanjit came racing down from the terrace as if he had seen something horrifying. We heard lot of turmoil on the roof.
4. That suddenly brick bating started from the rear of the house. My husband left from the front door and sought shelter in the next door neighbour's house. Unfortunately he was seen by someone in the violent crowd entering the next house. He had hid himself under a bed.
5. That the violent crowd entered the next door and in spite of forceful pleadings of the ladies of that house my husband was dragged out from his hiding place under the bed, hit on the head with an iron rod, pushed him to the road and burnt alive there. Whilst I was watching this horrible scene I heard a crashing noise. The mob had entered the house breaking all the doors.
I saw my son seriously wounded. I stood in front of my son to save him. In this time my nephew rang up my sister in law Mrs. Vasant and told him of the tragedy being enacted at Patel Nagar. Seeing this, immediately after having witnessed my husband's being burnt alive I nearly fainted.
6. That I saw a policeman standing outside my house. I pleaded with him to save my son. He put my wounded son in his jeep and took him to the Police Station.
7. That later I was taken in a police vehicle to the Police Station. I stayed the night there I did not see my husband's body again. My husband's body was identified by my relatives. I could not attend my husband's cremation.
8. That my other elder son was working with B.H.E.L. He was so traumatized by the injuries inflicted on him and the other family tragedy that he is still under a shock – and he has not been able to work for the last 16 years.
9. That my husband had set up a factory. After his murder, my elder son was in a shock and could not run the factory. I had to take care of the factory for 5 years till my younger son completed his engineering degree. I had no experience of business but I was compelled to shoulder this responsibility also.
10. That due to this tragedy the family has been in dire financial straits for the last 16 years.
