1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Gurnam Singh, aged about 45 years son of S. Swaran Singh, r/o A-302, Shastri Nagar, Delhi-52, do hereby on solemn affirmation state and declare as under: -

1. That I am residing at 302, Shastri Nagar and an also having my 'Real Industry' in the same house.

2. Upon the death of Mrs. Indra Gandhi, Non-Sikh indulged into violence against the Sikhs whose properties were looted and burnt and many Sikhs were killed in this communal violence, organized by Congress (I) leaders and the police turned blind eye to these serious crimes.

3. On 1-11-84, at about 9 AM, my house was attacked by about 10 Hindus, but after throwing stones at my house for some time, they left the place.

4. On 2-11-84, my house was attacked again twice in the day. On 1-11-84, itself Pawan Kumar r/o B-1447, Shastri Nagar, Delhi alongwith another person threatened me and asked me to vacate the house and run away otherwise I and my family would be killed by them.

5. On 3-11-84, at about 10 A.M., more than 1000 Non-Sikhs collected near my house, and were carrying lathis, gandasas, iron rods and some were carrying cans of kerosene oil. I could recognize most of them. The names and addresses of those persons are as follows and I could trace out their addresses and names subsequently within days time: -

1) Pawan Kumar s/o Amril Lal, B-1447, Shastri Nagar, Delhi,

2) Prakash s/o Chandgi r/o WZ-48, Nimbri village, Delhi,

3) Ved brother of Prakash,

4) Ch. Ram Swaroop, A-510, Shastri Nagar, Delhi,

5) Bajinder Misra s/o Raghu Nath, A-475, Shastri Nagar, Delhi,

6) Bengali Babu, A-312, Shastri Nagar, Pritma w/o Romesh Mishra

7) Ramesh Mistri r/o 312, Shastri Nagar,

8) Subhash r/o 308, Shastri Nagar (tea vender),

9) Satinder Kumar, r/o A-430, Shastri Nagar,

10) Manavji-A-311, Shastri Nagar,

11) Pappu r/o A-311, Shastri Nagar.

My house was looted by these persons and the mob led by them, then it was burnt. After about three hours military came and the mob started running away. One military officer Bhardwaj caught Ramesh Misra, Manavji, Pappu and one more person of Nimbri village was arrested at the spot.

6. I had purchased goods, clothes and utensils etc. for the marriage of my daughter. The mob looted everything from my house and factory including material finished and unfinished goods. Cash of Rs.5,500/-. My total loss is of Rs.1,65,500/-.

7. The police did not record my statement because the SHO did not like that names of culprits should be mentioned. Under threat of being killed or otherwise harassed and in view of the attitude of the police during riots, I did not take courage to make any complaint thereafter, when SHO refused to record it.

8. This attack on Sikhs was well planned and organized by Congress (I) workers and police did not take action as if Government had instructed them to get the Sikhs looted, their properties burnt and Sikhs killed. Action may be taken against culprit.
