1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Gurbachan Kaur, W/o Late S. Sher Singh, aged about 60 yrs., R/o C –22 C, Tilak Vihar, Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That in Nov.'84, I was residing at Y-600, 643 and 647 (Flats), J.J. Colony, Nangloi, N.D.-41, along with my family members consist of my husband, two sons and one daughter.

2. That I heard that then pm Indira Gandhi has been killed. Thereafter the mob attacked the houses of Sikh Community. The Granthi of local Gurdwara announced in the loud speaker requesting the Sikh Community to gather in the Gurdwara itself. Consequently almost all the Sikhs collect in the said local Gurdwara. The said local Gurdwara was attacked by the mob and the Sikhs gathered in the Gurdwara, did not allowed the said mob to entered the said local Gurdwara.

3. That at about 12 o'clock on the same day, one train from Rohtak side came and hundreds of persons get down from the said train. Those persons who came from the Rohak side directed the mob to kill all the Sikhs.

4. That those person came from Rohtak in train they were having iron rods in their hands. Those persons were so train in killing the persons accordingly they had killed the Sikhs residing in this locality by giving them one shot to Sikh person. They were also having a white powder chemical for burning the house as well as to the Sikh persons.

5. That we hid ourselves in one of the resident of locality, who belongs to the Muslim Community i.e. Hamid and I saw the persons who looted my house who were in the mob from that house. My house was not burnt by the said mob.

6. That the said local Gurdwara was also set on fire by the said mob the Sikh person who were inside the local Gurdwara were also killed by the said mob.

7. That on 1st Nov.'84, my son S. Harbhajan Singh whose aged about 20 yrs. was killed by the said mob along with other Sikh persons who were inside the said local Gurdwara.

8. That on 2nd Nov.'84, in the morning my husband S. Sher Singh was also killed when we came out of the house of the said Hamid. We were restrained by the mob and not allowing us to go anywhere however in the evening we manage to go to the police station and stayed there in the said Police Station Nangloi. Only for one night and thereafter we went to the Tilak Nagar Camp in the evening on 3rd Nov.'84, where we received food etc.

9. That after about 10 –12 days I came back to my house and lodged a complaint with P.S.Nangloi.

10. That I have received a sum of Rs.3.5 lakhs as compensation in respect of death of my husband but I have not received any compensation in respect of loss suffered by me towards household articles and my property, which I am entitled to.
