1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Dr. Gurjit Singh S/o Late Dr. Kuljit Singh R/o 274, Kalayan Vihar, Delhi-9, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That in Nov.'84, I was living at 274, Kalyan Vihar along with my parents and family.

2. That I along with my father late Dr. Kuljit Singh (who died on 20th September, 2000) was having clinic cum chemist shop at 2588, Punjabi Basti, Subzi Mandi, Delhi-110007.

3. That on 31st Oct.'84, at about 11 pm while I along with my father was at my clinic, mob of 250-300 persons approached the shop. The mob was shouting anti Sikh slogans "Kill the Sikhs loot their houses and burn them". On seeing the large mob with lathis, iron rods other dangerous weapons, we left the shop and took shelter in adjoining house in Basti Punjabian. Earlier we had given many telephone calls to the police. Their response was that they could not provide any protection to us. We had to protect ourselves.

4. That on 1st Nov.'84, in early morning at 4 am when it was still dark we left Basti Punjabian and reached our house at Kalyan Vihar, Delhi-9.

5. That at 2 pm on 1-11-84, a mob of 500 person attacked our house at Kalyan Vihar, Delhi-9. The mob entered our house. On seeing mob, we left our house and took shelter in the house of our Hindu neighbour. Our neighbour did not allow the mob to put our house on fire, as that would have affected their houses also. Mob looted our house completely and what could not be carried away was broken and destroyed by the mob.

6. That on 5th Nov.'84, my father lodged police complaint with P.S. Kingsway Camp of the loss suffered. ( copy attached)

7. That we suffered a loss of Rs.2 lakhs in household items.

8. That we did not receive any compensation for loss of household items.

9. That on 7-11-84, when we went to see our clinic / chemist shop, we found that it was completely looted and broken. My father lodged Police report at P.S. Subzi Mandi. (copy attached)

10. That we suffered a total loss of 4 lakhs for household goods and clinic / chemist shop.

11. That a compensation of Rs.1,000/- was given by the Govt.

12. That I am entitled to full compensation for the loss suffered as stated above.
