1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Daler Singh S/o S. Lakhmir Singh aged about 48 yrs. R/o B-5, Motia Khan, Double Storey, Paharganj, New Delhi-55, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That I am at present working as Welder at Motia Khan, Paharganj, New Delhi.

2. That at the time, when riots took palce in 1984, I along with my family was residing at Motia Khan, Paharganj, New Delhi.

3. That on 01/11/84 in the morning around 8:30 am an armed mob came to our area and started looting and burning houses, shops belongings to Sikhs. The mob first tried to burn the Gurdwara Guru Amar Das Ji, which is situated in our colony. I tried to push away the mob but they gathered in very large number. As they failed to burn the Gurdwara, the mob turned to the shop and started looting and burning my shop.

4. That as the time, when this incident of looting and burning took place, two constables of Delhi Police were sitting in my house & were watching T.V. As soon as the mob started looting & burning, the constables of Delhi Police left and went to Police Station instead of protecting the shop and Gurdwara Amar Das Ji, of Paharganj, New Delhi from the mobs.

5. That I identified some of the persons in the mob and I also recorded their names in the FIR registered with Police Station, Paharganj, New Delhi. A copy of FIR is also attached herewith as ANNEXURE 'A'.

6. That my house was totally demolished by the mobs and for 2 years. I was residing in Punjab along with my family and two small children.

7. That I suffered a loss of Rs.90,000/- in my shop due to looting and burning & around Rs.1,50,000/- due to demolition of my house.

8. That I was not granted any compensation by Delhi Govt. for the loss suffered by me in the riots. I was granted only Rs.5,000/- by Delhi Govt. for repairing my house.
