1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Baldev Singh S/o Harnam Singh, aged 53 yrs., R/o B-41 D, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi-110018, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That in the year 1984, I was residing in a Jhuggi, No. G-325 at Jhangirpuri in Delhi and was having my own business of Garments.

2. That after killing of Indira Gandhi, then the Prime Minister of India, violence erupted against Sikhs all over the country including Delhi and on 2nd Nov.'84, I had to run away from my Jhuggi, along with my family. When I left, we could not take any jewellery, or household items including. Merchandize worth Rs.30,000/- and a cycle.

I was forced to run away from the residence otherwise I along with my family would have been killed by murderous mob. I had taken shelter with my relatives at Majlis Park and on or about 10th Nov., I left Delhi and went to Punjab. At this stage I may state "Gurdwara" at Majlis Park was also burnt along with "Guru Granth Sahib".

3. That having lost means of livelihood, my residence and having witnessed carnage against Sikhs, I was under state of shock, therefore I shifted my family to Ludhiana in Punjab and on 26-11-84, I was given RED CARD No. 1453/21, which was given to persons affected by 1984 carnage.

4. That the carnage of 1984, destroyed me psychologically and till date I have not able to come out of shock, besides I have not been able to revive my business and I am on the verge of starvation. I, further state that no bank or financial institution gave us loan, so that I could re-start my business and only lip service was there. In his connection, I bring on record, State Bank of Patiala's letter at 10-3-88, but the loan was never sanctioned, as bank wanted equitable or other security for sanction of loan.

I further state that, it was mere eyewash and the so called "Welfare State" of India has failed me and I am on verge of starvation and without work. I request that I should be given Rs. 3.5 lakhs compensation and my case should be treated at par with persons who were killed, as "my state" is no better, my body is alive physically but agony which I am undergoing ie. being penniless and without work for no fault of mine is far worse then being dead. I request to the conscience of well meaning citizens of India to assist me in re-building my life and life of my son's and daughters.
