1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Avtar Singh S/o S. Bahadur Singh, aged 50 years, resident of 20/474, Kalyanpuri, Delhi-91, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. On 31-10-84 in the evening, we came to know that away from our Mohalla trucks and buses were being burnt by mobs but our block remained safe on that day.

2. On 1-11-84 in the morning we learnt that the mob had attacked blocks No. 11, 12 and 13. We remained inside our houses.

3. That the hindus of 19 and 21 blocks did not allow the mob to prceed towards our block, due to which these was peace in our block. No police came to ur block. We remained safe because of the help of blocks No.19 and 21 only. The police did not help us.

4. On 2-11-84 at about 10:11am police came to our block and told us that mob would not come to our side and we should go back to our houses.

5. On 3-11-84 Military came. They told us there was no fear of any kind, since they had come there. From 3-11-84 we hindu and Sikhs joined together and started keeping night-watch (Pehra) and due to that our Block remained safe.

6. A few days back I came to know that Surbir Singh Tyagi SHO was approaching some Sikhs of our block and asking them to make a statement in his favour. He is calling people to his Police Station and pressurizing them for making a statement in his favour.

7. In some connection I went to the Police Station and I was asked to give a statement in favour of Tyagi SHO but I refused to do so.

8. I was told by Joban Singh that some Sikhs were summoned to the Police Station and they were asked to state in favour of Tyagi. I also learnt that some people had actually given statements in his favour.
