1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Anoop Singh son of Chet Singh, aged 48 years, resident of J-8, East Vinod Nagar, Delhi-91, do hereby solemnly state on oath that: -

1. On 31.10.84, when we got the news of death of our Prime Minister we were at our home at that time.

2. On 1.11.84 at about 10am, a mob comprising of 50 – 60 persons came and went away after destroying the Nishan Sahib (religious flags of Sikhs) of our colony's Gurdwara when we rang up police for protection they said that could do nothing and we should manage ourselves for our safety.

3. After some time when two policemen came on motorcycle we begged them to save us. We were still conversing with the police men that many trucks carrying about 5 – 6 thousand men came in our colony. The police men also joined them. They were having lathis, iron rods, axes, kerosene oil tins and white powder with them. The number plates of the trucks were covered.

4. Policemen were inciting the mob by shouting, "Kill Sardars, loot and burn their houses. They are traitors. They are snakes. They have killed our mother." The mob surrounded our colony from all sides. When we saw their siege, we went inside our houses and closed our doors. First of all they damaged our taxis and set them ablaze. Then they started burning our houses after setting them on fire. We escaped from the rear door. But while escaping, many men were caught and murdered by the mob. They set our houses on fire after looting. I suffered a loss of about Rs.50,000/-.
