1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

AFFIDAVIT OF AMRIT KAUR, WIFE OF AVTAR SINGH, AGED 60 YEARS, RESIDENT OF A-3/73, JANAKPURI, NEW DELHI.

I, Amrit Kaur, the above named Deponent, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. When on 31-10-84 we came to know the sad demise of our Prime Minister Indira Gandhi we felt very sad. At that time my husband was not at home.

2. On 2-11-84 at about 11 am I went to the roof of our house and saw that S.S. Mota Singh School was burning and some people were looting goods from the Singh Sabha Gurdwara of A-2 Block. Thereafter, they had set fire to the Gurdwara. I rang up Janak Puri A-3 Police Station two / three times and told them that the Gurdwara and Mota Singh School were burning, but the reply was that they cannot do anything. I came down-stairs.

We had hardly taken our meals when at about 3:40 pm a bus stopped in front of our house and people started making loud noise. We thought that those people were going for paying homage to Indiraji. From the window of our house we saw that a D.T.C. bus was standing there. The crowd had alighted from that bus and was shouting. At that moment an ambassador car came there and one of the inmates pointed to them our house and signalled to them to attack it. Standing on roof top with folded hands we begged them to help us but they paid no heed to our request.

3. The mob which had come consisted of about 300 persons, and they were carrying with them lathis, irod-rods, stones and small bags / packets. On arrival they immediately started hammering our gate with iron rods. Some miscreants started pelting stones on our house. This continued for about three hours. Absolutely frightened, we dodged here and there to save ourselves. The mob continued to increase. Two / three policemen were also standing at a little distance there but they did not try to stop the mob from doing the mischief.

4. At about 7-8 pm we came down from the roof and escaped to our neighbour's house through the back door. After that the mob entered our house by breaking open the locks. From our neighbour's house we saw that some people were removing goods from our house and our double-storeyed house was set on fire. I did not recognize any person in that mob, because they were outsiders. My total loss is about 4 lakhs.
