1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Amarjeet Singh, S/o S. Kartar Singh, aged about 42 yrs., R/o 24, First Floor, New Market, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi-110008, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That during Nov.1984, I, with my family members, my father, my mother, wife and my son, age 2 yrs. were residing at the above address. I was having a shop called "Amarjeet General Store" at GF 24, New Market, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi.

2. That on 31st Oct.'84, though I heard about killing of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the New Market shops were open till normal time 7:30 pm

3. That on 1st Nov. I did not open shop. At about 1:30 pm I saw, through my window, that a mob of 250 –300 persons was moving towards my house. The mob was carrying iron rods, lathis etc. in their hand. They were shouting slogans against Sikhs.

4. That on seeing the mob I along with my family members shifted to the neighbor's house Sh. Amit Kohli.

5. That at 8 pm of 1st Nov.'84, I came back to our house and continued to stay there in a very terrified state of mind.

6. That my neighbors later informed me that the mob first opened the shutter of my shop with iron rods. They looted the shop. The persons in the mob carried away whatever came in their hand.

7. That on the lane where my shop is located, there is no other shop owned by Sikh. Neighbor shopkeeper could not stop the mob from looting my shop.

8. That later I was informed that the mob after looting my shop went to other area in New Market and looted shops owned by Sikhs.

9. That I along with my family members have saved our lives by taking shelter with my neighbor.

10. That the loss of my shop was of about Rs.85,000/- and I have got the FIR registered in the police station, Patel Nagar, ND. (copy attached)

11. That no compensation has been given to me till now.

12. That I got Rs. 25,000/- as loan and returned it in instalments.

13. That till now I have not yet been able to set myself fully.

14. That I want about Rs.5 to 6 lakhs loan amount so that I may be able to set myself in my business.
