1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Nanavati Commission

I, Ajaib Singh, S/o Late S. Dalip Singh, aged 70 yrs., R/o 1 /12, Nehru Bazar, Pahar Ganj, New Delhi-55, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:-

1. That I am residing at 1 /12, Nehru Bazar, Pahar Ganj, New Delhi-55, since 1949, along with members of my family 2 sons and 3 daughters.

2. That on 31st Oct.'84, when we learnt that Mrs. Indira Gandhi has been killed, I closed my shop and went to my residence above my shop.

3. That on 1st Nov.'84, at about 7 am I was informed by our neighbours that houses and shops of Sikhs are being looted and burnt.

4. That I could see from my house the mob looting shop of Sardar Sethi. Police person in uniform were present in the area. I was seeing from my house mob carrying looted goods. The police personnel were present but not stopping the mob from looting the shops or from carrying away looted property.

5. That at 6 pm I saw SHO of Pahar Ganj, known as Mr. Manan with police force, he fired from his revolver in the air. The mob immediately vanished from the bazaar. The curfew was imposed thereafter.

6. That I along with my wife shifted to the house of my daughter married to a non-Sikh across the road. While other members of the family were given shelter by our non-Sikh neighbours.

7. That I filed an FIR on 09-11-84, at Police Station, Pahar Ganj. (copy enclosed)

8. That I suffered a loss of Rs.82,700/-.

9. That I filed a claim in Tis Hazari Court and was called by claim settlement Commissioner vide letter No.(D+C(R+R)/CSO-I/594/)90 dated 23/4/88, but I was not paid any compensation.

10. That I pray that order to pay compensation for the loss suffered by me may kindly be ordered.
