Delving into how Hukam, Lekh, and Karma work together: Navigating the balance between divine will and human action.
Lekh in Sikhi refers to the divine record of all a person's deeds, actions, and thoughts, which are maintained by God. It is intrinsically linked to the concept of karma (action) and free will, where every action has a consequence, and Hukam (the divine will) governs the universe. Lekh reflects one's spiritual progress and can influence their fate in this life and beyond. It serves as a reminder for Sikhs to live virtuous lives, in harmony with divine will, seeking God's grace to purify their Lekh and ultimately achieve liberation (Mukti).
There are certain aspects of life you did not choose:
◾ Your place of birth
◾ Your body
◾ Many life circumstances
◾ Natural events
These are part of Hukam and your Lekh.
Lekh can be understood as the framework of your life—the set of circumstances and conditions through which your life unfolds.
It is not a rigid, unchangeable script, but a structured path shaped by past actions (Karma) and existing within Hukam.
While many things are determined by Hukam and Lekh, you still have the power to act:
◾ Free will says you can choose your actions
◾ Karma says your choices have consequences and influence how your life unfolds within your Lekh.
Together, these ideas encourage individuals to be mindful and aware of the impact of their actions, while also recognizing their ability to shape their future.
In this way, you are neither completely bound by destiny nor completely free. Instead, you are responsible within a given framework, which provides both structure and agency.
As we conclude our exploration of Hukam, Lekh, and Karma, we turn our attention to the final piece of the puzzle: Haumai (ego). In this last part, we will explore how the ego shapes our actions and decisions, and how overcoming Haumai can align us with divine will for spiritual liberation.
In
Part 4, the final part of this series, we'll dive deep into the Sikh perspective on Haumai, its impact on our spiritual journey, and how to transcend it to truly align with Hukam and Karma. Understanding this is crucial for experiencing true freedom within the divine order.
Don't miss the final chapter in our exploration of the balance between human freedom and divine will. Stay with us as we uncover the path to ultimate spiritual freedom in Sikh philosophy.
