Guru Angad And The Chaudary Of The Khaira Jats In Khadoor

The Chaudary of the Khaira Jats in Khadoor was a rich man named Jawahar Lal. The Chaudary was very fond of alcohol, so he was called as Maluka, the drunkard. As Guru Angad's popularity radiated far and wide, Maluka became jealous and began to speak against Guru Angad and his Sikhs. Maluka would laugh at the Sikhs when he saw them doing service for Guru Angad.

As visiting Sikhs would arrive in Khadoor, to meet Guru Angad, Maluka would be drunk and abuse them. Whenever Sikhs complained to Guru Angad, he would say, "You shouldn't care about such a man. Always live in the Will of God. If someone does bad deeds, you shouldn't follow them. God is all powerful and knows the deeds of all. What a man sows, so he reaps."

The Drunkard Falls Sick

By drinking too much, Maluka fell ill with a fever and developed epilepsy. He became insensible and foamed at the mouth. His parents and relatives tried every remedy and every form of incantation, they burnt incense to exorcise the evil spirits who they thought possessed him, they invited hindu sadhus to cure Maluka but all their efforts were in vain.

At last, friends suggested that Maluka should approach Guru Angad for help. Persons suffering from various ailments came long distances to meet Guru Angad, and all returned to their homes restored to health, so why wouldn't Guru Angad be able to help. Maluka accepted the advice and met Guru Angad.

Maluka Begs Forgiveness

Maluka begged forgiveness for his previous actions and asked Guru Angad to heal him. Guru Angad's prescription was not elaborate. He ordered Maluka to stop drinking alcohol, to repeat God's name through Simran and help those in need. Guru Angad explained that if his instructions where followed then Maluka would be cured, however if he disregarded the advice then his illness would return.

Maluka gladly accepted Guru Angad's advice and stopped drinking alcohol. The epilepsy also vanished on the same day and Maluka became healthy. He was relieved from the fits of epilepsy. He also became a Sikh of Guru Angad and began to serve those in need. Unfortunately, there was a sly hindu sadhu that lived in Khadoor, known as the Tapa, who opposed Guru Arjan.

Bad Habits Return If You Do Not Control Them

When the Tapa came to know that Maluka had renounced drinking and had become a Sikh of Guru Arjan, he became jealous and decided to intervene. The Tapa went to the house of Maluka and boasted that it was his own prayers that had effected a cure. Later, after some time, the Tapa said, "Chaudary Sahib! Alcohol has no connection with the fits of epilepsy. I have studied all diseases and can cure them. You are Chaudary of this area and are free to eat or drink whatever you like. You should not be afraid, I will protect you through my powers. The Guru has no power to harm you."

In India, hindu brahmins and sadhus are known for their deceit and lies. Maluka lost control on the advice of the Tapa and started drinking. Maluka became so heavilv intoxicated that he climbed onto the roof of his house and in a fit of epilepsy he fell and died. The Tapa hid outside the village in shame and escaped any blame.

When Guru Angad heard about the death of Maluka he asked his Sikhs to recite a hymn of Guru Nanak known as 'Alahania'. Guru Angad also advised the Sikhs to beware of intoxication, drug addictions and not eat such things which trouble our body and mind and said, "We should eat very simple good food."
