The Governor Of Kasur

Once Guru Amar Das visited Kasur. It was a time of excessive heat, and the accompanying Sikhs felt very weary. The governor of the city was a Khatri of the Puri tribe.

Guru Amar Das sent a messenger to the governor to request his permission so that tents could be pitched on his land. The governor replied, " I know the Guru; he is a Khatri of the Bhalla tribe. Only yesterday he lived in Basarke and today he is a Guru. He has attached men of all castes, high and low, to himself. They sit in a line and eat with him and with one another. If he chooses to be a Guru of outcasts, he can please himself, but I will not allow him to approach my dwelling."

On hearing the governors response, Guru Amar Das said, "One day my Sikhs will have sovereign power. A Sikh ruler shall reign here in Kasur, and the descendants of this Khatri who is now a governor shall become his servants." Guru Amar Das, departing, found his way to the hut of a poor Pathan.

On seeing the Guru the man arose and said that he was poor, otherwise he provide suitable comfort. Guru Amar Das replied in the words of Guru Nanak, "God can appoint a worm to sovereignty and reduce an army to ashes." Guru Amar Das continued, "Do God's service, and you shall become the Lord of Kasur, but if you practise tyranny then you will die."

A short time afterwards the Khatri officials in Kasur caused such a political disturbance that the Emperor ordered them to be disarmed and expelled, and Pathans appointed in their place. The latter and their descendants continued to govern that part of the Punjab until it was conquered by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the Sikhs.
