1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Sukhwinder Kaur (21 yrs.), W/o Prem Singh (24 yrs.), R/o B5/436, Nand Nagri, at present residing at C-29B, Tilak Vihar, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. I used to stay at our Nand Nagri residence with family members my mother Pritam Kaur (40 yrs.), father Mohinder Singh (45 yrs.) my husband Prem Singh, my brother Buta Singh (11 yrs.) and my children Ritu Kaur (1 yr.), Gurmeet Singh (9 yrs.), Surjit Kaur (5 yrs.) and Satpal Singh (2 yrs.).

2. The initial attack took place on the afternoon of the 1st of November 1984. We had seen buses burning in the morning, but had no occasion for imagining that any harm could come to us. Police jeeps had come to the locality on the morning. We informed them about buses being burnt and shops being looted. They paid no attention to our reports. They did not give us any warning.

3. The two Gurdwaras in the locality were burnt in the morning. By afternoon we decided that it was safest for us to stay indoors. In the afternoon the mob began throwing stones at our house. As we were taken by surprise we did not know what to do. At first my father and husband tried to go out with swords in their hands. But it was no use.

4. The mob first broke down the outer door, then they burnt down the inner door. They were using some kind of powder for the burning when the mob finally broke in, they beat my husband and father with pipe on the head. They were stabbed with knives.

5. I recognize two of the killers, who were involved at this moment of time in killing my husband and father. First was Bishan's brother Kishan who breeds dogs and Kanhyaiya who breeds pigeons. One of the men tore my kameez and asked me to come with him. My mother was also stabbed wit a knife.

6. When my father and husband fell to the ground, kerosene was sprinkled on them and they were set on fire. They were burnt to death.

7. All the people in the mob were from the locality. They were raising slogans like "Khoon Ka Badla Khoon Se Lenge" and "Jaise Tumne Ma Ko Mara Vaise Tumko Marenge." Chhote Lal who emerged as the leader of the mob, was riding a police motorcycle and firing pistol shots. The people I recognized in the mob were Kishan, Bishan, Chhote Lal, Billa (Fish-Sellers), Kappu, Pappu, Bhagwat, Ramu, his brother Raju and others from B-5 whose faces I can recognize.

8. First we took refuge in Radhye Shyam's (sweeper) house, but he turned us out after an hour or so. Then we went to Rajbir's house where we spent the night. He turned us out early next morning.

9. The army picked us up in the evening and took us to the Civil Lines Military Camp where we stayed for six days after which we were taken to Nanaksar Relief Camp. We were given considerable help by Nagrik Ekta Manch and Red Cross.
