1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Kulwant Kaur Gill W/o Gurbaksh Singh, aged 45 years, R/o H.No.A-78, Mohan Garden, Najafgarh Road, Delhi, at present residing with Mohinder Singh Gill, C-6, Sardar Nagar P.O. Model Town, Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1. On 1-11-84, at about 11:00 am, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, when we were sitting in our house, we saw a mob of approx. 700 – 800 persons coming in our area. Out of this mob I could recognize the following: -

Ram Narain – Ex-Pradhan of Village Matiala

Ram Kumar – who had lost the elections in village Nawada.

Suraj Bhan – Lambardar

Two sons of Chaudhry Sube of Mohan Garden Colony.

2. The mob threw stones on our house and out of fear we climbed on to the roof. When the mob saw us, some of them asked us if we had any arms? And if we had any, we should throw them down and they would not harm us. They stoned us heavily. We were injured. For the safety of our children, my husband threw down his rifle. We then came downstairs.

3. As we came down, the miscreants hit my husband on the head with iron rods. In the process of our trying to protect my husband, we all received serious injuries. Then Bal Krishan and his brother-in-law took us to their house where we remained upto 9:00 pm. We saw the mob threaten our protectors that if they did not turn out the Sikhs from their home, they (the rioters) would kill them also. Then our protectors took us to another room in the neighbourhood where we spent the night.

4. On 2-11-84 at about 10:00 am, another mob of about 15 men attacked us. They were armed with iron rods and hatchets. I and my husband were beaten very badly. They caught hold of one of my daughters and tried to molest her. This mob was being led by Chaudhry Khazan Singh who was accompanied by his son Ram Kumar and his wife Shanti. He was inciting the mob saying, "You should kill Gurbaksh Singh and loot his movables. I am with you."

5. Khazan Singh then took us to his house. Our neighbours were good enough to inform our nephew in Vikaspuri about our situation who brought an army vehicle and conveyed us to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. There, my husband died of severe injuries on 8th November 1984. In addition, during these riots, I had suffered a loss of several lakhs. Now my only prayer to our Government is that the guilty persons must be punished severely.
