1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

Affidavit of Inderjit Kaur, wd/o late S. Onkar Singh, aged 34 years, R/o A-3/54, Nand Nagri, presently residing at C-41, Janta Flats, Garhi, East of Kailash, New Delhi.

I do hereby solemnly state on oath as under: -

1. In the morning of 1.11.1984 at about 10.00 am, I heard noise in my gali. I climbed on to the roof of my house and from there I saw that the Gurdwara had been set on fire and people from the mob were throwing stones. The people were in thousands and were carrying in their hands iron rods, sabals, sticks etc. etc. The same mob then came into No.1 Gali and about 10.30 am they came to our house and broke the outer door, they entered and started breaking the inner door but we opened the door ourselves. They threatened us with the iron rods and ransacked the goods and other valuables they could lay hands upon, they carried these away. On our pleadings they went away.

2. At about 1.00 pm the mob made the second attack and set our outer door on fire and started pelting stones from outside. At that time my husband, our 3 children and one neighbour Subedar Joginder Singh, were in the house. As it became hot inside, the whole family became very panicky. The crowd standing outside challenged us to come out. We came out of the house through the fire.

3. After us, Sub. Joginder Singh also came out. My husband was hit on the back with iron rods. When S. Joginder Singh tried to run away from the back, he was caught and thrown on the ground. He was hit on the head with a big stone. His skull broke and he died on the spot. I ran forward to save my "Sardar Ji". I was caught hold of by four persons and was taken to the other side. I saw with my own eyes my husband falling down and being hit by iron rods. At that time my children were clinging to me. In that confusion I lost my small child (female).

4. In that mob I recognized Ramesh Mistry and one Ashok, son of Rationwala's shop who had caught hold of me. Ashok then told the mob to leave me and then Ashok directed us towards the house of Poorbiya. We could hear the voice from the mob that these ladies should not be killed as we would be used to clean their utensils. From the window of the house of the Purbiyas we could see that the injured Sikhs were being dragged by their feet.

5. Till about 8 pm in the night, I alongwith my two children remained in the house of Purbiyas. Till then I was not aware of my small daughter. From there Sh. Som Nath of our Gali had taken us to his house. There I came to know that my little daughter was safe in the house of Sardar Balbir Singh.

6. On 1.11.84 at 9.00 pm we saw that our double storeyed house was on fire.

7. At about 10.00 pm Nath left us in his Mausi's (aunts) house.

8. Amonst us one Satwant Kaur, remained in her house alone and had refused to come with us. After some time, Som Nath brought her to his Mausi's house and alongwith him there were two / four more Badmash. Then we saw that Satwant Kaur was in a very bad shape. On seeing her, we all became very nervous. The same Som Nath alongwith some other Punjabi boys left us at Kashipur Village. That night we spent in terror.

9. On 2.11.84 we remained at that place. Same evening we saw that one Sardar Ji (Poultry Farm owner) was stoned to death and then burnt in the courtyard right in front of our eyes.

10. When the night fell – the house owner's son took objection to our staying and then we under the supervision of 3 – 4 Punjabi boys, came out. But our children were not allowed to come out with us. We five / seven women were told to reach the Police Chowki by ourselves. It was dark on the way. On the way we saw a crowd which was killing and out of the crowd some people shouted to take us to the roofs. But out of the same mob, one individual said these oppressed women are already miserable.

11. We had gone a short distance that we met a military truck. When they saw us, they stopped the vehicles and asked us as to where we would like to go. We told them that we wanted to go to the Police Station. They dropped us at Durga Puri Gurdwara and promised to bring our children also.

12. The night of 2.11.84 we spent there miserably.

13. On 3.11.84 thewhole day and night we waited for our children and requested military people to get our children.

14. On 4.11.84, we did not get our children. We were taken to Gurdwara Nanaksar Camp where our children were restored to us.

15. On the morning of 5.11.84 Balbir Singh (from our gali) came to drop my youngest daughter. There we remained for 20 to 22 days and then went to Gurdwara Nanak Piao. Thereafter, in the month of March, 1985, we were allotted flat at Garhi Camp.

16. Police never came to our rescue instead they watched the whole scene amusingly.
