1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Hari Singh son of Phool Singh, aged 25 years, resident of Block 32, 119, Trilokpuri, Delhi-51, do solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1. That on 1-11-84, when news came that Indira Gandhi has been assassinated, we were informed that the Gurdwara in Block 36 had been set on fire. On hearing all that we came out of our houses. Outside we saw that the mob was coming towards us. They were equipped with lathis, bricks, bottles, cans of kerosene, which they were carrying in their hands. The mob stopped in Block 33. Thereafter came two policemen who had rifles in their hands.

The policemen had some talk with the leaders of the mob, which advanced further and started heavy showering of stones on all of us. We retaliated. The policemen told us to get into our houses and n harm will be done to us. We told them that we will not go in. The policemen told us that if we did not go in, they would open fire. Thereafter the policemen fired in the air we were very much frightened and went inside our houses.

Immediately thereafter the mob surrounded our Block 32. I, too, hid myself inside the house. By then the mob came to my house. They broke open the door of the house with the help of iron rods. After breaking open the door, amongst the first entrants into the house was Kishori, who had butcher's knife in his hand. Immediately on entering the house Kishori caught hold of my hair and dragged me out. Standing outside Ram Paul Saroj was saying, "kill the Sikhs" and his companions attacked me with lathis and knives.

I received four stab wounds on my back and because of the beating with lathis and iron rods, my arm got fractured and I also received head injuries. I fell down. As soon as I fell down, my sister, who happened to be in my house at that time and my children clung with me and started weeping loudly.

I then heard somebody in the mob saying, "there a Sikh is running away". The mob then ran after him, leaving me half dead. In the melee, my children and my sister dragged me inside the house and hid me under a charpey and covering with beddings. Thereafter, persons came in search of me many a time but I was not sighted.

2. On 2-11-84 at about 6 PM, CRP vehicles came and I was taken to J.P. Hospital. There my arm and leg were put in plaster. From there, I came to Farash Bazar Camp, where I am still staying.
