1984 Delhi Sikh Genocide - Affidavits

1984 Affidavits

Affidavit submitted before the Misra Commission

I, Dildar Singh, age 40 years, son of S. Uttam Singh, resident of 21, Sanjay Nagar, G.T. Karnal Road, Delhi-33, solemnly affirm as under: -

There was peace in our area on 31-10-84 and there was no disturbance. For this reason on 1-11-84, I and my neighbourer Diwan Singh left for our work at Roshan Ara Road on a scooter. At a little distance, a boy stopped us and asked not to go further as there was a grave danger ahead as Sikhs were being killed and burnt in merciless manner. We then started moving back.

There is a railway crossing at a distance of about one furlong from our house. We saw that Jehlum Express had stopped there and a mob of about 4 – 5 thousand young men had alighted from the train. They were carrying iron rods of equal size, kerosene oil cans and some chemicals.

The mob at once started beating people and burning them alive we were taken back and ran towards our house. The mob followed us. On the way they burnt a number of vehicles.

The mob entered our house and started beating and injuring us. They attacked my brother, Mohinder Singh aged 52 years, son-in-law of my maternal uncle, Dilbagh Singh, aged 25 years and then burnt them alive by sprinkling oil on them.

We were completely perplexed and ran away from our house to have lives. We took refuge in the house of a neighbour. Pandit whose name we do not know. We stayed there for about two days. Police then took us to a camp, where we stayed for 9 days. We returned on the 12th to find the house completely burnt. Nothing could be saved. No policeman came to help us during the entire episode.

I and my neighbourer Dewan Singh had personally seen the mob alighting from the train.
