I, Bhajan Kaur W/o Gian Singh aged 46 years, R/o S-55, School Block, Shakarpur, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -
1. My husband was employed in D.E.S.U. He does a double shift of duty. He would come home at 8:00 PM and after taking his evening meal go back to work again. On 31-10-84 my husband did not come home for his evening meal. Sometime after 8:00 PM Pandit, the vegetable seller (green grocer) came to my house and informed me that he had heard that my husband had been beaten up by a mob and that I should find out about him. Hearing this, I went to the "Chowk" (Square crossing) and saw my husband's cycle and turban lying there and a policeman standing near them.
I asked the policeman as to which Sardar Ji had been roughed up and where he had gone. He told me that the Sardar had been taken to police station in a police vehicle and that if the Sardar was my husband, I should take charge of his bicycle and turban etc. Recognizing my husband's belongings, I brought them home.
2. On 1-11-84 at 5:00 AM, my husband came back home and told me that a police jeep had left him on the road nearby. My husband had sustained serious injuries, but I could only make use of some homely medicines to threat his wounds since all the shops were closed that day. In the evening some of our neighbours advised us to hid ourselves somewhere in the house because in the locality, the mob was on rampage looting, killing and burning.
At about 5:00 PM, the duaghter-in-law of the family living opposite known as "Chakiwala" Vijaya by name, came to our house and asked me to send her uncle i.e. my husband to their house for safety. I sent my husband, my husband's younger brother, Harminder Singh and my three daughters to their house. I stayed back at my house.
3. On 2-11-84 at about 9:00 AM our neighbour Arjan Singh came to me and asked us to remove our gas cylinder as the mob was setting houses on fire. I removed the cylinder and closing the doors of the house got out from the rear. As I was getting out I saw the mob closing in. The rioters were carrying iron rods, sticks and swords etc. I then saw my house burning but could do nothing about it.
A little later heard the shrieks and entreaties of my daughter's wailed, ‘Uncle ji, for heavens sake do not kill our Papa and Chacha.' Hearing this I could make out that they are killing my husband and his brother. I tried to climb up on the terrace of my house to see what was happening but could not as the house was on fire. I turned round and looked towards the house of Chakiwala and saw that Tilak was holding a sword in his hand, and Kacheru (the milk vendor) had an iron rod. Biharia also had an iron rod in his hand. They were hitting my husband and his brother. My daughter's wailed and entreated the killers, "For Gods sake do not kill our father and uncle."
I asked the Chakiwala that you had guaranteed safety to my husband and his brother, where are they. In reply he told me, "They have left for their Heavenly abode (Ram Nu Piare Ho Gae Han). Come and see for yourself." He guided me and my sister-in-law Darshan Kaur (wife of my husband's younger brother) by holding our hands to his house and pointed out their burning bodies. The sister-in-law of Chakiwala added, "A whole train load of Hindus from Punjab had arrived in Delhi with their bodies butchered by the Sikhs and this is why we are killing the Sikhs. Now you can go back to your house." I heard the rioters also shouting, "Throw these Sikh women out of the house." I recognize all the killers who are: -
a) Harian and his servant
b) Kacheru – the milk vendor
c) Sham Singh Tyagi
d) Madan and his sons
e) Ram Raj
I saw some of them armed with hatchets and their blades had stains of blood. Harian and his servant washed the blood-soaked clothes at the water-tap in front of our house. We (myself and sister-in-law) watched this being done sitting in front of our house.
4. My husband had worked in Libya for 4 years and had repatriated all his earnings to India. We had prepared complete dowry for our eldest daughter's marriage. All this was looted by rioters and the house was completely gutted. I still hold the cash memos of all the foreign stuff purchased by my husband from abroad.
