Does Previous Bad Karma Get Erased After Being Amrit Chhak?

Original Text:

Humble Translation: The previous Karmic account of sinners ceases only when they receive the treasure of Naam from Gurmukh Sant Punj Pyare in the presence of Guru Sahib, and then if they don't get indulged in the sinful activities again.

There is not an iota of doubt that after taking birth in the house of Satguru and destroying the cycle of reincarnation; in other words after becoming Singh Khalsa by consuming Amrit, right at the time one gets initiated with Gurmantra and drops of Amrit enter the body, all previously earned sinful Karma are burned. But to be safe from these sinful-Karma and to avoid committing sins in the future, it is extremely important and mandatory to continuing doing chanting of Naam with every breath; and one should never lazy. By being inattentive or non-alert from Naam, the five robbers (Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Hankaar) manage to attack at one moment or the other and the mind falters. The mind is an embodiment of these five (robbers). The mind is uncontrollable. Like an intoxicated elephant, it is required that it is controlled through the Ankush (tool to control an elephant) of Naam; only then it stays in control.

Vichaar: Many seekers ask if by taking Amrit all their previous sinful Karma are pardoned by Waheguru Ji or not. In this passage Bhai Sahib has confirmed that once the seeker gets initiated with Naam Gurmantr and Amrit, all his previous sinful Karma are burned. What a great news this is for all of us. We have taken billions of births and in these billions of births we have incurred trillions of bad Karma. If we were to pay for these bad Karma by suffering their consequences, there would be no chance of our salvation because who can pay off their Karma? No one; it's just too big to pay off. This passage of Bhai Sahib gives such a great sense of relief that all our previous bad Karma got burned at the time we got Amrit and if we can lead our life strictly according to Gurmat we would be just fine in the future.

There is another notion that we can derive from this. The only reason why we would take birth again is if we do something wrong in our post-Amrit-chhak life. We would take next birth only if we don't lead a pure Gurmukhi life and if we lead a life that is a mixture of Gurmukhi life and Maya life. The Karma that we earn while leading the Maya inspired life, will bring us back to this world again and who knows how long we will have to wait to get Gursikhi again. Who knows how many bad Karma we will do in the next life and this cycle of billions of births may start all over again. So it is imperative that we lead our lives in pure Gurmukhi fashion so as to avoid getting birth again.

Third important notion learned from this passage is that our previous lives' bad Karma is erased only if we don't do Patit-Karma (bad Karma) again and if we continue to do Bad Karma even after taking Amrit, then our previous bad Karma is not erased.

Having said that, the Pralabadh Karma i.e. the Karma that are ordained by Waheguru for the Jiv to suffer in this life-time are not fully erased but through intensive chanting of Naam and Gurbani, these Karma can get reduced to a very insignificant level. If Pralabadh was to get erased, the Jiv would cease to live, right away.

Guru Sahib kirpa karan and may we become true Gursikhs.

Kulbir Singh
