Guru Angad's Early Life

Bhai Lehna, who later on came to be known as Sri Guru Angad Sahib Ji, was born on 31st March 1504 at Sarai Naga, in Muktsar district, in Punjab. His father Pheru Mal was well educated and worked as a trader. He was respected by the people of his area due to his good behavior and sweet nature. Due to his good conduct, his house was a centre for all, he always helped the poor people.

Bhai Pheru Mal was a religious man. He was a great devotee of the Goddess Durga, from the hindu religion. He had made it his mission to go to the Jawala Mukhi Temple every year. He had also established an idol of Durga Mata in one room of his house, there, devotees used to sing songs in praise of Durga Mata.

On the birth of his son, devotees came in large numbers. They sang songs in praise of Durga Mata. On seeing the beautiful child all were thanking the Goddess.

As a child, Bhai Lehna seemed different from other children Bhai Pheru Mal provided good education lo his son. He arranged well qualified teachers to teach him Persian, Sanskrit and Arithmatic. When Bhai Lehna was sixteen years, Bhal Pheru Mal decided to get his son married. Bhai Lehna was married in village Sanghar near Tarn Taran In Amritsar District.

The whole family of Bhai Pheru had to leave their ancestral village because of the ransacking by the Mughal and Baloch militia who had come with Babur. After this the family settled at village Khadur Sahib beside the Beas river, near Tarn Taran Sahib.

While residing at the village, Bhai Pheru Mal continued his routine of visiting Jawala Mukhi Temple. Sometimes Bhal Lehna also accompanied him. He also became a devout follower of Durga Mata.

After the death of his father, Bhai Lehna led the Jatha of pilgrims of the village to the Temple. But though he had been converted a great devotee of Durga Mata, in his inner mind he was not fully satisfied. He felt something was wanting. He was in search of a truth that could provide him peace.
