Gurdwara Sri Tilganji Sahib Kottayam marks the site of the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji and Bhai Mardana.
Nearby Trivandrum and on its north-west were situated two small towns by the names of Palam and Kottayam.
Guru Nanak arrived and stopped here. There was also an old temple of the yogis here. During the course of his discourse with the yogis, Guru Nanak explained the principle of sharing with others, especially the needy, with whatever you have.
The yogis gave Guru Nanak a 'Til' (sesame seed) and asked if he could share it with others. Guru Nanak asked Bhai Mardana to take the seed, put it in a small earthen trough and crush it.
Guru Nanak then asked for the remains of the sesame seed to be added to water, giving everyone present a sip of water to drink. The place is now called Tilganji Sahib, wherein udasi mendicants used to live up to the 1960s.
