Gurdwara Sri Harian Vellan Sahib (also pronounced as Hariyan Vailan, Haria Velan) is a magnificent Gurdwara associated with visits from both Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji and Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Ji.
The words 'Harian Vellan' can be translated as, Harian (Green) Vellan (Vines) like the ivy plant; plural.
Guru Har Rai arrrived here from Kiratpur with his wife and an army of 2200 horsemen in 1651 AD (1708 Bikrami).
Guru Har Rai stayed here for three days and would hold diwans twice a day, in the morning and evening, for the Sikh Sangat.
Guru Ji would guide the sangat about the benefits of naam gurbani and walking along the righteous path established by Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji.
Gurdwara Sri Harian Vellan Sahib is located at the site of Baba Prajapati's house as this was where Guru Har Rai stayed. The whole area is surrounded by mango trees.
Guru Har Rai saw that Baba Prajapati was feeding his horse, who appeared to be well fed, and asked what the horsefeed was.
Baba Prajapati explained that he had dug the roots of creeping plants near his house. Guru Har Rai blessed Baba Prajapati and said that the plants would remain green and healthy here.
The Palm tree, to which Guru Har Rai tied his horse, still exists next to the Nishan Sahib. When Guru Har Rai arrived there was no water nearby. Noticing the water shortage, Guru Har Rai shot an arrow into the ground, and a water spring appeared. This is located a few yards away from the Gurdwara Sahib towards the east. The Sikh Sangat and horses all used the water source from there. Guru Har Rai blessed the place with healing properties for those that bathe there with faith. This Gurdwara is also a center of Sikhi and Gurmat Parchar.
The site of Gurdwara Sri Harian Vellan Sahib was where Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, arrived with 100 Singhs via Gurdwara Sri Shaheedan Sahib Ladhewal, Mahilpur and Gurdwara Sri Chukhandgarh Sahib, Bajrawar in 1703 (1760 Bikrami). Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh came to stay at this Gurdwara after securing the release of Brahmin Paras Ram's wife from the hands of an evil mughal, Zabar Khan.
Many Singhs were martyred during the fighting with Zabar Khan. The Singh's were cremated (antim sanskar) at the Shaheedan Gurdwara. The marble clad Thara (platform) is situated to the right hand side of the Gurdwara's main building. It has a blue coloured Nishan Sahib. Zabar Khan was taken to Anandpur Sahib before Bharat Shah who, after a trial, ordered a pit to be dug and Zabar Khan placed inside and shot with arrows.
